극동대, 제26회 음성품바축제서 다문화 화합의 장 열어
네팔 유학생, 힌두 전통과 풍자 담은 거리 퍼포먼스로 큰 호응
극동대학교(총장 류기일)는 지난 6월 14일(토) 충북 음성에서 열린 제26회 음성품바축제 ‘길놀이 퍼레이드’에 지역대학을 대표해 참가했다.
특히 이번 퍼레이드에는 극동대 재학 중인 네팔 유학생 43명이 참여하여, 네팔의 전통 축제인 ‘가이 자트라(Gai Jatra)’를 재현해 주목을 받았다.
‘가이 자트라’는 네팔의 전통 거리축제로, 유쾌한 풍자와 코미디를 통해 슬픔을 이겨내는 메시지를 전하는 문화행사다. 학생들은 전통의상을 갖춰 입고 힌두교에서 신성시하는 소를 중심으로 한 퍼포먼스를 선보였으며, 네팔 내 다양한 민족의 의상을 통해 다채로운 문화를 소개했다. ‘ONE WORLD, MANY CULTURE(하나의 세계, 다양한 문화)’라는 공연 주제 아래, 외국인 유학생들은 웃음과 감동이 어우러진 무대로 지역 주민들과 교감했다.
극동대 유학생들은 퍼레이드 행진을 통해 한국의 전통 문화와 네팔 문화를 연결하며, 지역 사회와의 의미 있는 다문화 교류를 실현했다. 음성군청 및 축제 관계자는 “지역과 세계가 함께한 특별한 장면이었다”며 높은 호응을 보였다. 시민들 역시 기념사진 촬영 요청과 환호로 화답하며 축제 분위기를 더욱 뜨겁게 달궜다.
극동대학교는 이번 축제를 통해 외국인 유학생들이 지역사회의 일원으로 함께하며, ‘지역과 함께하는 대학’의 가치를 실현했다고 밝혔다. 이들의 참여는 단순한 공연을 넘어 다문화 포용과 글로벌 소통의 모범적인 사례로 평가받고 있다.

Nepalese Students Captivate Audience with a Street Performance Blending Hindu Traditions and Satirical Humor
Far East University (President Lyu Kee-il) took part in the 26th Eumseong Pumba Festival’s “Gilnori Parade” on Saturday, June 14, as the representative university of the local community in Eumseong, Chungcheongbuk-do.
The highlight of the event was a performance by 43 Nepalese international students currently enrolled at the university, who recreated Gai Jatra, a traditional Nepalese street festival.
Gai Jatra is a cultural celebration in Nepal known for its satirical and comedic elements that aim to overcome sorrow through humor. The students dressed in traditional Nepalese costumes and presented a performance centered on the cow, an animal revered in Hinduism. The parade also featured a diverse display of ethnic costumes from various groups within Nepal. Under the theme “ONE WORLD, MANY CULTURES,” the students delivered a performance that blended joy, laughter, and emotion, fostering a meaningful connection with local residents.
Through their participation in the parade, the Far East University students bridged Korean and Nepalese traditions, contributing to cultural exchange and mutual understanding in the community. Officials from Eumseong County and festival organizers praised the performance, calling it “a special moment of unity between the local and the global.” The students were also met with warm responses from the public, as many citizens eagerly requested photos and cheered them on, further enhancing the festive atmosphere.
Far East University emphasized that the participation of its international students in the festival reflects the institution’s commitment to being a “university that grows with the community.” Their involvement served not only as an artistic contribution but also as a valuable model of multicultural inclusion and global dialogue.
